Gianvito Turi: illustrator, visual designer and jazz lover
Gianvito is a visual designer and art director from Puglia, as well as a jazz music’s lover. His studies have always been linked to the world of communication, with consequent insights into the advertising industry. He began his career as a graphic designer and later as an art director. What distinguishes his style is the fact that he always conveys all his skills in the illustrations, giving them a unique and irreverent aspect.
“It is as if I had an evolution, I want to experiment through illustrations. Taking advantage of my previous skills as a graphic designer, I wanted to try the language of illustration, mixing it with the language of graphic design”.
Gianvito likes to work with 3-4 colors at most, for him it is a real challenge to play with the palette forcing the natural appearance of the representations. In particular he uses chromatic “contrast” to create perspective and for him illustration is 60% design and 40% realization.
The starting point and the source of inspiration of his art is music, one of his greatest passions! The interesting thing is he tries to translate all the suggestions transmitted by it in all his works. The visual passion linked with music comes from Gianvito’s admiration for the old covers of the 50s records: he began to illustrate and giving shape to his unique style revamping that language. Other sources of inspiration are the advertising posters of the 50s with the refined lettering. This is where his idea of using lettering in combination with illustration comes from.
“It is interesting to find the right harmony between shapes, to play with proportions, to strain perspectives and to find the right fit between different objects. I like to create a suspension effect by creating different depths. It is as if I put the objects on different levels, giving each one a sense of movement and suspension that I then go to dissect and freeze as in a still life image.
Gianvito believes that illustration can really communicate something, explain concepts or particular themes. For him illustration literally has this mission, the one of communicating a readable and interpretable concept.
