The sweet illustrations of Francesca Vitolo

What most influences your art and your expressive language? My art and expressive language are often influenced by the styles of the artists I admire, as Mary Blair; the stylized shapes and flat colors of her illustrations won me over to such an extent that I wanted to introduce this trait into my work as well.

How do your works come to life? I usually find inspiration before I fall asleep: I get several ideas in my head and then the next morning I sketch them out on a special sketchbook. Every now and then I also happen to “dream” about what I will later go on to make!

Do you have your own predefined palette or does it vary as needed? For my portfolio I love to use different shades, with a focus on light blue and turquoise because they are the colors that most identify me.

What do you think the future holds for you? Do you have any dreams in your drawer?  I have several dreams in my drawer including publishing a personal silentbook. I do not know for sure what the future holds for me but I can say that I am very satisfied with the path I am on. I feel that I still have a lot of work to do while always trying to do my best.

Digital or analog? Which do you prefer? I prefer making works digitally because I can be more flexible and confident during the process. Through digital I can give an extra touch to the illustrations by giving more expressiveness to the characters. But I don’t mind analog as well: it has always fascinated me and I will never stop loving the idea of getting my hands dirty with chalk, charcoal and India ink.
