Silvia Galimberti and her lively imaginary worlds

“I grew up in a small village in the province of Bergamo and this is probably one of the reasons why I love peace and getting lost in my thoughts. I’ve never been good with words, but since I was a child, I’ve always found it natural to express concepts through a language made of images”. In order to develop this propensity, Silvia Galimberti has focused all her studies on design and visual communication, in search of a path capable of providing her with a design method to apply to the creative process. Her illustrations are born from the observation of reality from a personal point of view and are translated into the creation of worlds built through a game of metaphors and references. 

The origin is an idea, followed by an urgent need to translate it into the form of a visual story. A sort of “conversation” is created between her mind and her hand, which takes the form of drawing lines, erasing lines and redefining lines of complete meaning.  “At this stage, the tool is irrelevant, but once the preliminary draft has been made, I switch to the digital drawing, which removes the fear of mistakes and allows me to proceed more freely. The illustration obtained in this way is more precise and regular, but I often cannot resist the impulse to “dirty” it with textures, to look for an imperfection capable of humanising the result”.

Silvia’s relationship with colour is instinctive and natural, and perhaps this is why she enjoys choosing colours so much. She does not have a pre-established and unchangeable palette, but she changes it according the need and sometimes the mood. 

“Colour is synesthesia and every colour combination gives rise to different sensations and messages. I like to explore different combinations while limiting the number of colours used, more out of a mental pattern than a real need.”
