Gastrite: Just the right amount of daily annoyance and burning at the magazine’s fingertips.
“We all hate. We hate dogs who bark early in the morning, those who invade our space while talking and, above all those who talk while eating. We hate the slow walker, the slow guy at the checkout at the counter machines, and unfortunately we hate whoever sold us that umbrella on the subway, which broke soon as we opened it. We all hate the moralism. So why don’t we talk about it?” This is what the founders write about the new editorial project that is named as the side effects that hate brings with it: Gastrite.
A university publishing project at the Politecnico di Milano, 5 girls (Betta, Eli, Fabi, Fra and Rosa) and a series of lucky events that come together: these are the ingredients that made GASTRITE born. It is an irriverent magazine with an ironic tone, completely born during the quarantine; it speaks skillfully about the daily discomfort in all its forms. All of this is mixed with stereotypical hatred and Hamletic dilemmas supported by Morsi Editore: a new independent editorial workshop founded by Giulia Pavani. Morsi’s aim is combining different artistic and cultural realities of the Turin area while sensitizing the raising awareness the community about the visual arts.
But who is Gastrite? Gastrite is a surreal character politically incorrect, irreverent, ironic, contemptuous and treacherous, it was enclosed in an editorial product able to represent the current discomfort. Gastrite has the face you see on the cover of Issue Zero and in those to follow. It is an invented character and, like all imaginary friends, it’s defined in every single detail. It is a 24 years old girl, tall, thin because of a perennial gastritis, and with straight wavy hair, because that’s what the five designers behind the project have in common. Gastrite is an unpaid intern at a newspaper, and her daily task is to review the drafts of the articles to be published. A workload that pushes her to drink a lot of coffee, which certainly doesn’t help her stomachache.
It is from the idea of “proofreading” that the founders have developed their magazine, in which news articles are constantly interrupted by the annoying and unsolicited point of view of Gastrite.
