The self-irony of Anna The Pug
Anna Bonito, aka Anna The Pug, is a freelance visual designer based in Milan who currently works in the digital world as a UX/UI designer and Visual Manager.
An Icelandic soul with a Pugliese accent, Anna reveals that in one of her three parallel lives she cultivates her illustrator project, which serves as both personal therapy and a point of experimentation between analog and digital.
“If you’re wondering what my third parallel life is, it’s that of an aspiring rock star. But of the three, it’s the one least traveled at the moment.”
Her illustrations come out of the blue from a feeling, concept or thought that buzzes in her head and she feels the need to process. Drawing digitally is undoubtedly the most direct way Anna possesses to give shape to what she is feeling in a given moment. She feels that analyzing concepts by illustrating them is a bit like solving them after all.
“Given the immediacy of the process, I chose a minimal and dry style characterized by black outlines and few repeated colors (the bare minimum to make the message direct!)”
So she has always preferred Black and White, and uses colors only as accents to emphasize elements or simply make others mnemonic, such as the red of her hair that she repeats in all the illustrations that represent herself. Other recurring colors, considered by her more “meditative” are teal, whale blue, purple and pink, all slightly desaturated to coordinate the work with the “off-white” background that she uses as a base. Among her significant sources of inspiration we find music in the first place, especially contemporary visual artists. She confesses to us, “Usually when these two worlds meet, very powerful things are born.”
