The sweetness of Gaia Scarpari’s illustrated animals
Gaia Scarpari is a young illustrator from Milan, with a refined and elegant taste. She was raised in a creative family and since childhood she was interested in the world of drawing and art in general. She attended the Giulio Romano High School of Art in Mantua and she then degreed in publishing at the University of Milan. It was during her bachelor that she discovered the world of publishing, madly falling in love with it! (perhaps thanks to a teacher who was able to convey the value of publishing and everything that involves the visual creation of books). Gaia was so much fascinated from this world that she was pushed to continue her studies in editorial illustrations with a course at ars in Fabula in Macerata.
“When I was a child I often leafed through “Bosco di Rovo”, I think that’s where my passion for the animal world comes from. I have a sort of double personality: the first that loves illustration and the second one that likes the publishing industry, especially the one related to childhood. Today I collaborate with Corraini Edizioni for which I edit and illustrate materials for the Farfarfare project.
I’m always looking for new styles and techniques, I do several tests in both digital and analog. My biggest love? Well, paper of course! I feel safe with it. Working on Paper makes me feel comfortable. It’s not by chance that all my creative vein was born with watercolor.” Gaia prefers oil colors because they give her the possibility to change where necessary… in addition to this, the final result has a very textured and full-bodied effect, just the way she likes it!
“When I draw animals I am conscious of humanizing them, I like to give them their own personality and a name. Over time I have noticed a constant when I set to work, and that is that I almost always draw the “eye” in the end. In my mental construction this part of my illustration’s subjects represents the highest form of humanization, so I leave it at the end to be able to give a precise intonation to all the scene.”
